Waltz: The oldest dance known to ballroom, the Waltz
is graceful and euphoric.
-
Foxtrot: Glitzy and reminiscent of Broadway, the
Foxtrot is danced to show tunes and classic recording artists like Frank Sinatra.
-
Tango: The most dramatic of all Ballroom dances.
Sharp, staccato and passionate it draws some moves from Flamenco.
-
Viennese
Waltz: This is the most original form of Waltz; it’s very fast-paced
with lots of rotating action.
-
Quickstep: An international Ballroom dance, the
Quickstep is big, fast and danced to Big Band music.
Latin Dances
-
Salsa: A world-renowned, festive party dance. Full of
quick footwork and flirty movement, Salsa is dancing to an intoxicating rhythm. Saturday nights at Simply Dance are
devoted to this dance, come learn this weekend!
-
Cha
Cha: A very staccato and lively dance, Cha Cha can be dance to many
popular songs of today in addition to Latin classics.
-
Rumba: From Cuba, the Rumba is considered the dance of love
with its slow, habanera rhythms. If you’re interested in learning Latin dances, the Rumba is good place to
start.
-
Samba: It’s the carnival dance of Mardi Gras! Samba
has a pulsating, syncopated rhythm and is one of the most challenging Latin dances.
-
Bolero: Slowest of all Latin Rhythms, Bolero dancing
allows for deep bends in the knee and very shaped patterns.
-
Merengue: The easiest of all Latin dances, allowing
you to step on every beat. Merengue has a marching feeling to the legs with Latin motion throughout the
body.
-
Bachata: Like the Merengue, but danced mostly
side-to-side to a strong dotted rhythm.
Swing Dance
-
West
Coast: The most sultry of all Swing dances. West Coast is danced to
rhythm and blues music, disco hits and even more modern music.
-
East
Coast: The mother of all Swing dance, East Coast consists of several
rhythms, usually single and triple time. Contrary to popular belief, East Coast is a very smooth and sophisticated
dance.
-
Lindy
Hop: Similar to East Coast Swing, but danced to
eight-count timing. Lindy is the form of Swing best known for its kicks and hops.
-
Carolina
Shag: The Swing sensations of the South, the Carolina Shag originated
during the 1930’s in Charlotte, North Carolina. It’s a combination of East and West Coast Swing, with more hip
motion.
Club-Style Dances
-
Night Club
2-Step: Developed in the 1970’s for slow to moderate tempo
music. Night Club 2-Step borrows bits and pieces from the Bossa Nova and Salsa, but the dance is entirely its
own. Best danced to slow, romantic songs.
-
Hustle: Do the Hustle! A very versatile dance for
today’s music - can be danced to popular artists like Jennifer Lopez and Janet Jackson in addition to disco hits
from the 1970’s. The Hustle features a lot of turns and circular movements, and is sometimes danced in a slot. It’s
flashy, quick and fun!
-
Argentine
